Space Exploration - Benefits and Knowledge Gained
6.E.1.3 - SWBAT summarize space exploration and the understandings gained from them.
- I will evaluate tools, products, and technology related to space exploration.
Scenario #1 - Help Market NASA to the Public
Directions –With the recent economic crisis facing much of the world, governments have been forced to reallocate money to programs they see as more important, for the recovery of their nation. NASA is one of the government programs that the U.S. government has cut funds for. Years removed from the near collapse, NASA is trying to reestablish themselves as the world leader in the advancement towards a better understanding with all things involving space. Your marketing firm has been hired to change the public opinion of the NASA space program. Governmental funding has dried up and now more than ever, research needs to be a priority.
Mission #1 – You will familiarize yourself with some of the major milestones in space exploration. You will be required to read a minimum of four articles to get you underway. You are free to continue your research if you feel curious and/or inspired to do so. Remember, the more you know the more you can say.
Mission #2 – Your final article titled Space Exploration Timeline touches on many “famous firsts” in space exploration. The final page of the timeline requires you to infer the next five “firsts”. Be sure to include the countries that might be involved, what missions will be launched and what objects will be observed in space.
Mission #3 – NASA is trying to create a “Building Blocks for Space Exploration” advertisement. Your marketing research team will use the information learned from the four articles to show these building blocks and what the future holds for space exploration. Each member of this three person team will create two of the six building blocks. Below are the required blocks to include…
Bonus Mission –NASA will use a recent mission to promote the need for additional government funding to help support future projects. They decided to produce their first movie to serve as a propaganda tool to show the public what they accomplished and why NASA is so important to the citizens of the United States. Your job is to create a movie poster to promote the movie. Consider using a fake movie poster maker like http://www.fakemovieposter.com/ or http://bighugelabs.com/poster.php.
Scenario #2 - Public Service Announcement
Public support for the NASA Space Program has plummeted over time. Funding for NASA has dried up with the recent election of President Ficklestein, as he carried out his pledge to funnel money from programs like NASA and reallocate funds into other areas like the Small Business Investment Act. “Exploration” is now in the hands of independently wealthy individuals and private organizations like the X Prize Foundation. Their mission statements are to invest in solutions to the problems/questions of today as they serve the community and make the world a better place to live. The driving force behind these difficult challenges is an incentive; a substantial monetary prize for the winning team. Anyone can enter the contests and people from all walks of life compete for millions of dollars.
Develop a website proposal/public service announcement requesting governmental funding for NASA to be reinstated and how funding your space exploration initiative is an investment for the success of future generations. Be sure to include how this funding will aid in reaching NASA's new goals.
